This one was another very complex job. This 50-year-old wall was holding up a road behind it, and had buckled under the pressure that came from holding up so much busy land without any drainage. Cracking and bowing was very evident when M.O.S. Construction arrived to propose a solution.
When it came time to begin works, we demolished the old retaining wall – all the time successfully working around the NBN pole, existing gas lines and a huge tree. After demolition we started excavation, and that’s when we hit rock. After seven days with a five-ton machine drilling with the best auger on the market, we had holes 2400mm deep that would do their job of holding up the road for the next 100 years.
After excavation and drilling was complete, we installed 150uc posts in the ground and 100mm thick 3-bar reinforced concrete sleepers. We then installed 100mm agricultural pipe with sock and 8 tons of drainage stones. Finally this wall had drainage, relieving any future pressure weighing against it. Once this was back-filled, the poles were secured with mass concrete. Our client asked for us to finish off the job with the installation of a new timber fence to provide privacy.
Not only was this job complex, but it required extensive engineering and the use of some very strong specialised equipment.
